- HowTo — step-by-step content in a machine-readable format gets cited heavily in procedural answers.
- Article / NewsArticle — establishes authorship, publication date, and content type clearly.
- BreadcrumbList — helps AI understand your site's topical hierarchy and your authority in a given area.
- Organization / Person — establishes entity identity, which is increasingly important for E-E-A-T signals in AI contexts.
The problem is that most sites either don't have structured data at all, have it incorrectly implemented, or have it on the wrong pages. I've audited dozens of sites where Schema markup existed but was broken — malformed JSON-LD, missing required fields, or markup that described something completely different from what the page actually contained. This one is underrated and I don't see it talked about enough. AI search engines are heavily entity-based — they build a graph of who you are, what you know about, and whether your claims match what's known elsewhere on the web. If your entity profile is thin or inconsistent, you're basically a stranger to the AI, and AI doesn't cite strangers.
Practically, this means: your About page should clearly define who you are and what you do. Your author profiles should exist and link to external sources (LinkedIn, industry publications, etc.). Your NAP data (Name, Address, Phone) should be consistent across all platforms if you're a local business. Your brand name should appear consistently and not vary between "Acme Corp," "AcmeCorp," and "Acme Corporation" across different pages.
It also means claiming and optimizing your Google Business Profile, your Wikipedia presence if you're eligible, and making sure any data sources that AI models are trained on (Wikidata, Crunchbase, industry databases) have accurate information about you.
Failure #4: AI Crawlers Can't Actually Access Your Content
You probably know about Googlebot. You might not know that ChatGPT has its own crawler (GPTBot), Perplexity has PerplexityBot, Anthropic has ClaudeBot, and Amazon and Apple have their own too. Each of these bots needs to be able to access your content to index it for AI answers.
A surprising number of sites either accidentally block these bots via robots.txt, or have JavaScript-heavy pages that these crawlers can't render properly. Unlike Googlebot, which has years of sophisticated JavaScript rendering capabilities, many AI crawlers are simpler and fall back to raw HTML. If your content lives behind a JavaScript wall, they never see it.
The fix: audit your robots.txt, make sure your key content is server-side rendered or has a static HTML fallback, and check that your page speed is acceptable (slow pages often get partially processed or skipped entirely by AI crawlers with shorter timeout limits).
Failure #5: Your Content Doesn't Signal Confidence
AI models have a strong preference for content that is specific, verifiable, and confident. Hedged, wishy-washy writing that says "it depends" without explaining what it depends on gets skipped. Sentences that make specific, attributable claims — ideally with data, dates, or named sources — get cited.
Compare these two versions of the same information:
Version A (what not to write): "Email open rates can vary quite a bit depending on a lot of different factors including your industry, your list quality, and when you send."
Version B (what AI prefers): "The average B2B email open rate in 2026 is 22.1% according to Mailchimp's benchmark report, but SaaS companies consistently outperform this at 28–34% when sending on Tuesday mornings."
Version B is citable. Version A isn't. Notice it's not just about adding numbers — it's about making a specific, attributable claim that an AI can include in an answer without worrying it'll be wrong.
A Practical GEO Checklist for 2026
Rather than doing a comprehensive audit of every page (which takes forever), I recommend starting with your top 20 pages by traffic — the ones you most want showing up in AI search answers — and running through this list:
Direct Answer Test
Read the first 150 words of each section. Does it directly answer what the H2 promises? If you have to scroll more than a screenful to find the actual answer, restructure it.
Schema Audit
Use Google's Rich Results Test on each page. Check for FAQPage schema on any page with a Q&A section, HowTo on any instructional content, and Article on blog posts. Fix any validation errors immediately.
Robots.txt Review
Check your robots.txt for GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and any catch-all wildcard rules. If you're blocking these intentionally (for content protection), that's a conscious choice — just make sure it is intentional.
Entity Consistency Check
Google your brand name. Do the top results show a consistent entity? Is your Organization schema on your homepage matching your About page and your Google Business Profile? Inconsistencies here silently kill your AI citation rate.
Specificity Pass
Do a ctrl+F for phrases like "it depends," "various factors," and "can vary." Each instance is a citation opportunity being wasted. Replace them with specific claims, even if you have to add a caveat afterward.

The Bigger Picture: SEO and GEO Aren't Enemies
I want to push back on the framing that's been floating around — the idea that AI search is killing SEO and everyone needs to "pivot to GEO." That's not right, and I think it's making people panic and make bad decisions.
The fundamentals still work. Good content wins. Authoritative sites get cited. Fast, accessible pages perform better. Structured data helps. The difference is that in 2026, the audience for your content is increasingly an AI model reading it before a human does, and that AI has specific preferences you can optimize for.
The Google March 2026 core update made this even clearer. Sites that got hit hardest were those relying on volume over quality — AI-generated content farms, thin affiliate pages, aggregators with no original insight. Sites that gained were the ones with clear authorship, specific real-world experience, and content that actually helped people make decisions.
That's not a coincidence. Google is aligning its traditional ranking signals with what it needs for AI Overviews to be trustworthy. Do the work that makes your content trustworthy to both a human reader and an AI model, and you're not playing two games — you're playing one game well.
